How low can your currency go?

The South African Rand is struggling. This month it reached an all-time high of 13.86 ZAR to $1. The weak currency is not good news for many South African individuals and businesses, but it is particularly bad news for someone saving for a round-the-world vacation.

The strength of the currency is starting to be more of an influencing factor when planning our slow vacation. We are also starting to look at research on the cost of living in the different countries, as it is quite applicable for long-term stays. Colombia, India and Indonesia are now far more appealing as seen on this infographic from on Matador Network.

A lot more investigation is required for us to see which locations are best for us to stretch our savings. These investigations will need to be intensified if the currency gets any weaker, and at this point there is, unfortunately, no indication of any improvement.

Our original grand travel plan can be found here, but we will be adapting that as circumstances change.

    Just returned from Zanzibar. Fast Jet travels to Dar es Salaam for R600 per person one way. You can either take a ferry or short flight (we used Coastal Aviation) from Dar to Zanzibar. We went for 8 days - total cost around R14 000.00. We went when the rand was in free fall to the Dollar. Booking.com is the way to book your accommodation. I for one shop around nowadays...

An adventure in Nepal

We would not consider ourselves to be adventurous people. At home, we are not naturally inclined to participate in adrenalin inducing activities. Booked through a third party in India, we did not really know what our tour in Nepal encompassed and went quite blindly into it all. Fingers Flambé

We have had our first noteworthy injury on our round-the-world trip. While dishing up some breakfast, the paper serviette that Schalk was holding under his plate caught fire. It is worth noting that breakfast is served early at our current location and Schalk only fully wakes up by about lunch time. So when a sleepy Schalk was told he was on fire, he may have reacted a little slowly to put out the fire. Three fingers got slightly toasted with a great big blister forming on one finger. All in all, we think he was lucky as he quickly got his hand under cold running water. Two travelling chefs were also quick to come to his rescue with burn cream and dressing for the fingers (it is nice to see how strangers are willing to help fellow travellers in a difficult situation without a second thought).
